< REVISED >

Interpersonal conflicts occur when a person or a group of people frustrates or interferes with another person’s efforts while trying to achieve a goal. It usually happens in the workplace environment as everyone is competing against each other in order to get credits for the work to get promoted.

An example of interpersonal conflict situation is when there is a lack of communication between the different parties in the workplace environment. For instance, James and Keith have known each other since polytechnic as they have been studying together since then. Now, both of them are currently working in the same company for quite some time ever since they ORDed from the army. They are currently working on the same project as a team. One day, Mr. Tan, their department manager asked Keith to help him to convey an important message to James as he is rushing off to a meeting with a client. However, during the process of conveying the message, Keith fails to convey them appropriately to James thus affecting the progress of the project. As a result, James fails to submit the revised proposal that Mr. Tan wanted to be on his table when he is back from his meeting with the client. Due to this miscommunication, James was being reprimanded by Mr. Tan and he blames Keith for being the one that causes all these troubles. James felt that Keith acted that way as he was jealous of James' achievements in the company despite entering the company together at the same time.

From the context above, I have noticed that James did not hear Keith out on his explanations after the incident and purely blaming Keith for what have happened. This, in fact, could lead them being uncomfortable with each other, not communicating with each other or even saying bad stuff about each other while in the company. In my point of view, I thought that James could have heard Keith out on his explanations and this incident can be prevented if they make an effort to communicate with each other.

To conclude, if you were in this situation, what do you think you would have done?

  1. Jing Guang, I see potentially good ideas in this post.

But, the writing lacks coherence and cohesion. I suggest you focus on one situation (real or imagined), describing it in some detail, as indicated in the task instruction. For e.g., give your characters names and place them in a particular setting.

    Also, ask only ONE question.

Specific information and the one question will help your readers to give directed and meaningful responses.

  2. Hi Jing Guang,

To this post, I agree that good friend should stick together from start to the end. But by doing so, we do meet issue in work place. As working have position promotion scheme compare to school where we are just student and not different in position.

Miscommunication is commonly happen when someone is convey an important message. The best way to solve the issue is that the person that is conveying should write down important points that need to be convey over to the other party. As this will not miss out any information that could slip off the mind at the time.

But of course, I feel that James should hear what Keith have to explain and not just shut him off. Keith may want to apologize for his mistake and as a friend for so many years, there is also times that James may have done things wrong towards Keith but Keith listen to his explain. Maybe after understand why Keith miss out the full message, they could have solve the conflict within them.

  3. If I were Keith, I would have owned up to Mr Tan that I had not conveyed the message property to James. This would have at least prevented James from blaming Keith without knowing his side of the story. Therefore, there would not be any tension between the two of them.

  4. Hello Jing Guang,

If I were to be Keith, I would owned up to Mr Tan that I was the one at fault for not updating James about the task. By doing so, it will help in maintaining the friendship even though the mistake was already made. James must also play a part by forgiving Keith and try to open up and listen to what Keith is trying to explain.

To me it is important to have trust and good social relationship with friends as they are the ones that will be doing future projects and group work with me. Earn the trust and respect from your friends and it will in return help you in the long run.
